How to reduce air pollution in your home
The quality of the air we breathe in can affect so many aspects of our lives at home. We take a look at how o reduce air pollution in your home.
1.Reduce the use of harmful cleaning products
Harmful cleaners has chemicals that give off fumes which can irritate your nose, mouth and lungs, as well as your skin. Reduce your use of cleaning products or air fresheners, especially those containing limonene (which gives the lemon citrus smell). Preferable use a biodegradable product like Cleen Green (available at most local supermarkets)
2. Check the humidity level
It’s not something we regular check or are aware of, but we recommend keeping an eye on the humidity level inside your home every now & then. The ideal humidity level is between 30-50%. It is easy to monitor this using a free mobile app like Digital Temperature.
3. Reduce smoking indoors
According to experts, the most common indoor air pollutants are cigarette smoke. Qualified Pulmonologist, Sumita Khatri has said that the residual gas and particles from cigarette smoke that settle, do pose a health hazard, particularly in rooms with a lot of fabric or carpeting. Khatri further went on to say, that the risks are disproportionately high in children, who are more likely to be playing on the ground, and in people with chronic heart and lung problems. For the safety of your family or children, avoid smoking indoors.
4. Monitor air ventilation
Always ensure proper ventilation in damp areas, such as bathrooms. This helps prevent mould which has been linked with upper respiratory tract symptoms. Some people are more sensitive than others including babies and children, elderly people, and those with respiratory problems such as allergies and asthma.
5. Use an extractor fan when cooking
Most stove tops are sold in combination with an extractor fan unit nowadays. When cooking at home it is important to extract raising steam and fumes for your own safety.
Did you know that if you don’t use your extractor fan while cooking, it can sometimes lead to high levels of nitrogen dioxide which can exceed the count of the most polluted roads.
